Deep Tissue or Lymphatic Drainage: What Each One Feels Like
One works through layers of muscle with real pressure, the other is slow, light and rhythmic, and the price gap is small.

Deep Tissue and Lymphatic Drainage sit near each other on the Tranquility Spa menu, and people sometimes assume they're two strengths of the same thing. They aren't. One is about pressure that reaches down through the muscle. The other is slow, rhythmic and deliberately gentle. Here's what each feels like in the room, what they cost and how to pick.
What deep tissue feels like
The menu describes Deep Tissue Massage as pressure applied through several layers of muscle and tendon, aimed at pain and stiffness. In the room, that usually means slower strokes, more sustained pressure and a therapist who spends real time on one spot rather than gliding past it. It's firm work. You should feel it, but you shouldn't be gripping the table.
Deep Tissue is offered at 30 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $85, 90 minutes for $120 and 120 minutes for $170. Thirty minutes suits one target area, such as shoulders or lower back. An hour at $85 covers most of the body with extra attention wherever you ask for it.
Daisyavitia charlieavitia, a regular, put it plainly in a Google review: "Had an amazing deep tissue massage!! I come here all the time." Repeat visits say something about a treatment that asks you to hand over a full hour of firm work.
What lymphatic drainage feels like
The menu describes Lymphatic Drainage Massage as a gentle technique that facilitates lymph movement. Gentle is the word to hold on to. Expect light, slow, rhythmic strokes rather than anything that feels like digging. If you want to be worked hard, this isn't that hour. If you want a quiet, unhurried one, it is.
It's offered at 60 minutes for $100, 90 minutes for $150 and 120 minutes for $200. There's no 30-minute version, so plan on at least an hour. Slow, repeated strokes need time, and a shorter slot would leave little room for them.
Both treatments are easier to enjoy if you arrive unhurried. Drink water earlier in the day, wear something loose you can slip back into, and give yourself a few minutes after the session before heading back out onto Ygnacio Valley Road. Rushing straight from the table into traffic undoes some of what you just paid for.
The two side by side
At every length they share, Lymphatic Drainage costs more: $100 against $85 for an hour, $150 against $120 for 90 minutes, and $200 against $170 for two hours. The gap runs between $15 and $30. Neither is a bargain or a splurge. They're different treatments, and the right one is the one that matches the hour you want.
What a group of reviewers found
Emma Michael's group of three booked two deep tissue massages and one lymphatic drainage, and her Google review gives a clear picture of how it went. She wrote that it was a "great space and Alicia was firm but steady for the lymphatic." She added: "We all left feeling much better than before (especially after a 7hr hike)."
Her words "firm but steady" are a good reminder that pressure is something you talk about with your therapist in either treatment. Gentle on the menu doesn't have to mean barely there, and firm doesn't have to mean painful. Say what you want in the first few minutes and expect the hour to adjust.
Who tends to book which
- Book Deep Tissue if you want firm, sustained pressure and you're happy to feel it working.
- Book Lymphatic Drainage if you want a light, slow, rhythmic hour and firm pressure isn't what you're after.
- Not sure? Call (925) 722-5888 and describe how you want the hour to feel rather than guessing which name to pick.
Pressure, comfort and what therapists don't do
At Tranquility you can change the pressure, the temperature and the music, and you can stop at any time. You're always modestly draped, and the door is never locked. Therapists don't diagnose or prescribe, so if you have an injury, a medical condition or doctor's instructions, mention them at the start, and check with your doctor first if you're unsure whether massage suits you. Clients going through chemotherapy or radiation need a doctor's note.
Emma's group walked in after calling first, which is the sensible way to do it. The spa is open daily, 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM, at 1815 Ygnacio Valley Rd in Walnut Creek. Parking is free. Arrive 15 minutes early if it's your first visit so the paperwork doesn't eat into your time on the table.
