Booking Etiquette That Makes Your Massage Hour Better

A good massage starts before you reach the table. The booking, the arrival, the first five minutes in the room: all of it affects how much of your hour you actually enjoy. These are the practical things worth knowing before you visit Tranquility Spa at 1815 Ygnacio Valley Rd in Walnut Creek.

Arrive 15 minutes early

The spa asks you to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment. New clients complete a form, and the first visit includes signing an informed consent, which gets renewed if you've been away for a year. That paperwork is not part of your treatment time. If you show up late, the session may be shortened, and the original treatment time is still charged.

Arriving early also gives you a few minutes to slow down. Parking is free, so you won't be hunting for a meter, and the lobby is a calmer place to start than a rushed walk across the lot.

Booking and cancelling

You can book online or by phone at (925) 722-5888. A credit card is required to reserve. Jung Fitzpatrick wrote in a Google review: "I've been able to book online and over the phone as well as cancel last minute over the phone. It's also possible to book something fairly last minute, which is nice."

Cancelling is easy, but the policy is firm. If you cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, you're charged half the price of the services booked. If you don't show up, cancel when you arrive, or cancel with less than an hour's notice, you're charged full price. The best habit is to call as soon as your plans change, since the earlier the call, the more it helps the spa and the next person who wants your slot.

Open daily, nine thirty to nine thirty

Tranquility is open every day of the week from 9:30 AM until 9:30 PM. That makes an evening or Sunday massage a normal request. Hayati G wrote in a Google review that it's worth "booking a weekend session" with a favorite therapist because of limited availability, so if you have a preference, book ahead.

In the room: draping, pressure and speaking up

You are always modestly draped, the door is never locked, and the breast and genital areas are never massaged. You can change the pressure, the temperature and the music, and you can stop the session at any time. None of that requires an apology. Tell your therapist the moment something is too light, too firm, too warm or too cool.

Therapists don't diagnose or prescribe. If you have an injury or a health condition, mention it before you begin, and check with your doctor if you're unsure whether massage is a good idea for you. Clients going through chemotherapy or radiation need a doctor's note. Guests under 18 can be treated only with a parent or guardian in the room.

A short checklist

  • Book by phone or online and keep your credit card handy to reserve.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early, especially on a first visit.
  • Tell your therapist about pressure, injuries and sensitivities at the start.
  • Call to change or cancel at least 24 hours ahead to avoid the half-price charge.
  • Bring a parent or guardian if the guest is under 18.

Groups, events and offices

If the massage you have in mind is for a team or an event, Tranquility also offers mobile and corporate chair and table massage. There's a quote form on the site where you give the event date, time and address, and the spa has been taking bookings for employee appreciation events.

For everything else, the process is short: call, book, arrive early, speak up in the room. Those four habits protect your hour, and the rest is up to the person on the other side of the table.

One more note for first-timers: you don't need to know anything about massage to book one. You don't have to make conversation, you don't have to pick the right technique on the first try, and you don't have to be an expert on your own muscles. Pick a treatment from the menu, tell the therapist what you want the hour to feel like, and adjust as you go. Tranquility also sells gift cards and packages, which makes it easy to give a friend a first visit without guessing their schedule.
